Intelligent metering system in energy meters using the modem RB900SG

Smart meters are one of the key solutions for the future of energy. By 2027, the global smart metering market will grow by 9%, and its value will reach almost 40 billion USD. Thanks to these new solutions, consumers will be billed for electricity according to actual consumption, and not according to forecasts as before.

In order to remotely read the current energy consumption, it is necessary to replace the meter with one that allows two-way communication with the electricity supplier and its user. A GSM modem can also be used for this purpose, which, by connecting to the meter, will transmit the current meter reading via cellular data transmission.

The modem RB900SG manufactured by Elproma Electronics is an ideal solution for this type
of modernization. The company produces its industrial and wireless GSM devices using the Teleorigin brand. Here are the short characteristics and advantages of this modem:

  • The device is based on a high-quality LTE cat module. M1 / NB1 or LTE cat. 4.
  • The applied GSM module provides a wide range of supported cellular frequencies.
  • Device is the TCP server that provides the clients connecting to it transparent communication with devices connected to its port serial.
  • It is a TCP <-> RS232 / 422/485 gateway.
  • Software the device constantly monitors the status of the network and TCP server and
    in case needs, take appropriate measures to ensure stable and maintenance-free operation.
  • The device requires a SIM card with public IP, preferably in a private APN,

The RB900SG modem has a rectangular, plastic housing with dimensions of 100 x 70 x 27 mm. Its small size allows it to be installed under the cover of the energy meter. The manufacturer provides for the possibility of mounting the device inside the meter using dedicated handles. The weight of the GSM modem doesn’t exceed 120 grams. In summary, the small size and wide range of supply voltage allows easy integration into many models of energy meters.

A competitive advantage of this modem is the free, dedicated Teleorigin Manager application. With its help, we can easily configure the device and communicate with the device remotely or locally. The application itself is very intuitive, we can easily set, among others, APN, a new password for the device, upload settings from a previously prepared file, set the hardware reset period (in hours) and reset the start time.

We can also check the device name, firmware version and hardware version, find the name of the network operator, GSM/GPRS connection status, cell ID codes and verify the serial port parameters.

All these advantages, together with the low price of the device, make the modem RB900SG an excellent solution that provides remote reading of the current energy consumption from the meter.
