Advanced Cooling Technologies, Inc. Set to Receive $3,300,000 in Funding to Develop Technologies to Reduce Methane Emissions

Funding Awarded as Part of ARPA-E Program Seeking to Create Cleaner Solutions for Oil, Gas, and Coal Sectors

Lancaster Pennsylvania – Advanced Cooling Technologies, Inc. (ACT) announced today that it has been selected to receive $3,300,000.00 in funding from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E). The funding is part of an ARPA-E program unveiled earlier this year—the “Reducing Emissions of Methane Every Day of the Year” (REMEDY) program—that aims to reduce methane emissions in the oil, gas, and coal industries.

ACT together with ExOne Company, University of Southern California (USC), and Zeeco, proposes a novel Swiss-roll incinerator system that can achieve 99.5% flare gas combustion efficiency under a wide flare gas flow rate and concentration.

“The concept of Swiss-roll combustor was first proposed by Prof. Felix Weinberg in 1974 and has been studied extensively by Prof. Paul Ronney at USC,” said Dr. Chien-Hua Chen, Lead Engineer at ACT.  “We are very excited for the opportunity to collaborate with ExOne, USC, and Zeeco on this ARPA-E project and have the opportunity to impact global emissions.”

“Materials and manufacturing have always been the major challenges of the advanced heat-recirculating combustor,” said Dr. Patryk Radyjowski, R&D Engineer at ACT.  “We believe the recent advancement of manufacturing can solve this long-term challenge.”

The REMEDY funding that Advanced Cooling Technologies, Inc. (ACT) will receive will be spread across two stages of the program over three years. Stage 1 is will focus on lab-based tests confirming the operability of technical proposals, approaches, and system components. Stage 2 will expand the scale of testing, and ultimately include field tests.
