AECOM selected to provide clean closure of a coal ash impoundment involving the beneficial use of ponded ash

LOS ANGELES (October 17, 2019) — AECOM, the world’s premier infrastructure firm, announced today it will provide engineering, procurement and construction management services for the clean closure of the coal ash pond at A.B. Brown Generating Station located outside Evansville, Indiana. The project will remove up to 6,000,000 tons of coal combustion residuals (CCRs) from the environment and deliver it for use in the construction industry. This multi-year contract, valued at $114 million, was awarded to AECOM by Vectren Corporation, a CenterPoint Energy company.

“We’re grateful for the opportunity to apply our technical expertise to help Vectren safely and cost effectively close this coal ash impoundment with an environmentally friendly strategy to reuse the materials for cement production,” said Mark Rokoff, senior vice president with AECOM’s Environment business line. “The process of collecting and reusing ponded coal ash will reduce the potential environmental risk of long-term storage, while generating revenue through the sale of ash material for use in other industries.”

Coal ash, often referred to as CCR, or coal combustion product (CCP), is the material left over after coal is used to generate electricity. This project will result in the safe, clean closure of the A.B. Brown coal ash pond. AECOM’s scope of work includes dewatering, excavation, conveyance and loading CCR from a 160-acre ash pond for beneficial use. This includes designing and building the infrastructure necessary to transport ash from the pond and load it onto barges.

This project enables AECOM to leverage a broad spectrum of unique expertise and apply it to a project that will reduce costs and provide a more environmentally sustainable solution for our clients. “As a leader in the CCR management arena, AECOM has served us well over the last five years and we are looking forward to continuing our collaboration on this industry-leading project,” said Wayne Games, Vice President of Power Generation Operations for Vectren, a CenterPoint Energy company.
