Worley awarded contract by Vertex Hydrogen for UK low-carbon hydrogen plant

Worley has been awarded a project management services contract by Vertex Hydrogen for its low-carbon hydrogen production plant at Stanlow Manufacturing Complex in Ellesmere Port. The 350MW plant is the first in the UK to have completed front-end engineering and is expected to be one of the first large-scale and low-carbon hydrogen plants in the world.

The plant will enable UK industrial businesses to transition away from fossil fuels, capturing some 600 thousand tonnes of CO2 per year. It’s also an integral part of HyNet, one of two UK Government Track 1 clusters for industrial decarbonization.

Worley’s scope will cover the inside battery limit of the production plant, and all necessary outside battery limit works. It also includes support in creating the infrastructure needed to connect to feedstocks, products, and modifications within the refinery to accept low-carbon hydrogen as a means of powering production instead of fossil fuels.

The work will be executed by Worley’s offices in the UK with support from specialists around the world.

“We are moving rapidly to deliver this vital plant and are delighted to have Worley onboard who share our vision to deliver real projects fundamental to the energy transition” said John Egan, Project Director at Vertex Hydrogen.

“Hydrogen has the potential to decarbonize hard-to-abate sectors, and this project is essential to the decarbonization journey of the HyNet low-carbon cluster in the UK. We’ll utilize our global expertise in low-carbon hydrogen with local teams in the UK to help Vertex Hydrogen achieve its vision and support our purpose of delivering a more sustainable world,” said Chris Gill, Vice President Low-carbon Hydrogen at Worley.

About Vertex Hydrogen: Vertex Hydrogen is a leading player in energy transition. We are developing the first large scale, low carbon hydrogen production hub in the UK. This will produce (in its initial phases) 1GW of hydrogen (the equivalent energy use of a large UK city like Liverpool) and capture some 1.8 million tonnes of carbon per annum. By 2030, we expect to deliver nearly 4GW of low carbon hydrogen – 40% of the UK Government’s national target. We are investing an expected £1bn in the UK’s largest industrial region (the North-West) to switch from fossil fuels to low carbon energy, helping to secure and grow vital industries and jobs in and unlocking billions of pounds of additional investment. Vertex is an integral part of HyNet, one of two of the UK Government’s Track 1 clusters for industrial decarbonisation.
