America’s Power Statement House Environment Subcommittee Hearing on “Clean Power Plan 2.0: EPA’s Latest Attack On America’s Electric Reliability”

Washington, D.C. (June 6, 2023) – America’s Power President and CEO Michelle Bloodworth issued the following statement regarding today’s House subcommittee hearing on the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) proposed Clean Power Plan 2.0.  The proposal imposes new carbon regulations on coal- and gas-fired power plants which provide 60% of the nation’s electricity: 

“For the second time in less than a week, grid reliability and EPA overreach were the subject of Congressional oversight. Today’s hearing showed that EPA regulations are on a collision course with grid reliability. EPA has implemented, finalized, or proposed a number of rules, including the Clean Power Plan (CPP) 2.0, that will force an unprecedented number of coal retirements and increase the risk of electricity shortages. EPA projects that the coal fleet will total only 46,000 MW by 2030, one-fourth the size of today’s coal fleet, because of CPP 2.0, other EPA rules, and other anti-coal policies. The reliability of the grid is at a tipping point, and we urge Congress, grid officials, and EPA to take all necessary steps to avoid the reliability trainwreck facing the electric grid.”
