Salt River Project Issues RFI to Gather Information on Projects up to 500 MW of Wind Power

Salt River Project has issued a Request for Information (RFI) for up to 500 megawatts (MW) of wind energy. The RFI seeks response from experienced wind project developers who can provide wind energy supply from new or existing wind projects. No contract will be entered into as a direct result of this RFI process; however, SRP may use the obtained information to develop a future Request for Proposal (RFP).

Information from the RFI will be used to develop SRP’s future energy procurement options to help grow its renewable portfolio and manage long-term procurement cost.

“SRP is committed to the environment just as we are to serving our customers,” said SRP Manager of Resource Acquisition, Barry Petrey. “We have a history of responsible stewardship of our community’s resources, and with that, we explore ways to displace the use of fossil fuels, introduce new technologies and ideas, and reduce our carbon intensity. Harnessing carbon-free energy sources like wind helps us meet our sustainable energy targets.”

Energy generation from a diverse fuel mix allows SRP to reliably serve the energy needs of its customers. The utility has energy assets in coal, hydroelectric, natural gas, and renewable resources including solar, wind, biomass, and geothermal.

SRP is committed to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions by more than 60 percent by 2035 and by 90 percent by 2050 compared to 2005 levels. As part of this, the utility is on track to acquire 1,000 MW of new utility-scale solar energy by 2025. More detail and documented progress on SRP’s renewable energy goals can be found by reviewing SRP’s 2035 Sustainability Goals.

Respondents to the wind energy RFI are asked to provide information of interest as detailed here: srpnet.com/WindRFI. As outlined,

  • SRP does not have a specific preference on commercial operation date.
  • SRP does not have specific project location preferences.
  • SRP is seeking projects that can be delivered to the SRP transmission system.
  • All projects that help SRP achieve its carbon-intensity reduction and cost-reduction goals will be considered.

RFI responses must be submitted to SRP by July 31, 2020. Responses as well as inquiries and questions related to the RFI may be sent to [email protected].
