A smooth upgrade to S+ Operations with no downtimes and disturbances.
Lakewood Cogen Plant is a combined cycle facility with a generating capacity of 246 MW, configured with two combustion turbines and one steam turbine. Cogen’s primary fuel source is natural gas Backed up by ultra-low-sulfur diesel (ULSD) fuel which operates during natural gas supply disruptions. When Essential PowerTMdecided to modernize Lakewood Cogen’s control rooms, plant reliability was an essential requirement: the supplier was not only requested to provide a new human machine interface, but to grant its seamless integration with no system downtimes.
The winning solution was ABB’s S+ Operations, part of the Symphony Plus family, which is tailored to the specific needs of power generation industries such as integrated operations, precise information and life cycle management, flexible and scalable design, as well as built-in security features, to mention just a few.
Critical components were shipped ahead of scheduled delivery time so as to allow a smooth migration without system disturbances: the new Symphony Plus HMI’s was installed in parallel while the old system continued to operate, by virtue of ABB’s evolution strategy which allows to upgrade the existing systems to Symphony Plus avoiding unit downtime.
Other benefits coming along with s+ Operations are higher levels of efficiency, reliability and availability of the plant, thereby extending equipment life and reducing maintenance and downtime.
