Sequestration

Department of Energy Office of Fossil Fuels
Fossil fuels will remain an important part of domestic energy consumption into the 21st century. Availability of these fuels to provide clean, affordable energy is essential for U.S. prosperity and security. However, there is a need to balance this security with growing concerns over global climate change linked to CO2 emissions. Roughly one-third of the United States’ carbon emissions comes from power plants and other large point sources. To stabilize and ultimately reduce concentrations of this greenhouse gas, it is necessary to employ carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology.  The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Fossil Energy has made CCS a key element of its research, development, and demonstration (RD&D) portfolio by focusing on cost-effective capture technologies; monitoring, verification, and accounting technologies to ensure permanent storage; permitting issues; liability issues; public outreach; and infrastructure needs.  Moreover, the DOE is collaborating with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to establish a regulatory framework for injection and geologic storage of CO2.

GDS-C30 and GDS-C90 Scale Removal Systems

Goodway Technologies Corporation
You asked for smaller, more portable descalers and we listened. Introducing the GDS-C30, and it’s big brother, the GDS-C90. Constructed of heavy duty polyethylene and acid proof components, these units are designed for years of use in industrial applications. The secret to their success at removing scale lies in the innovative Flow Reversal Valve. During the descaling process, lime scale dissolves and creates foam and gas, which act as a barrier to further scale reduction. Using the Flow Reversal Valve allows for the foam and gas to discharge into the tank, eliminating the barrier effect and considerably speeding up the descaling process. Each unit is self priming and safely contains chemicals within its integral tank, allowing for maximum user friendliness. The GDS-C30 works great on small size applications like oil coolers and heat exchangers, while the GDS-C90 will take care of larger boilers and chillers. Reduce Steam and Gas Turbine Outage Time Using Laser Alignment

Ludeca, Inc.
CENTRALIGN ULTRA was specifically developed for the alignment of steam and gas turbines. The system precisely aligns internal elements with upper halves installed or off, for distances up to 133 feet. Accurate bore measurements can be acquired without interrupting other work taking place in the turbine; saving time over traditional methods like piano wires, micrometers and optical instruments. CENTRALIGN ULTRA assures true bore center measurement and reveals bore out of roundness. Stable wireless data transmission ensures reliable and complete data transfer of information between the measuring sensors and the computer. Over long distances and extended measurement periods laser stability is subject to fluctuations through variations in air density or temperature. To ensure measurement accuracy, an additional fixed sensor constantly monitors the laser drift at the far end of the machine and automatically adjusts readings to compensate for such drift. The CENTRALIGN ULTRA brackets are specifically designed for ease of use and extremely high accuracy. Brackets can be installed in magnetic or non-magnetic bores, and tops-on or tops-off configurations, with bore diameters from 4.75” to 166.5”. Introducing the FlexStream® Technology to the Power Industry

MOGAS Industries
MOGAS Industries has taken its long-respected and reliable RSVP and C-Series valves and introduced the FlexStream® Technology to the Power Industry. By either placing the patented trim into the seat or in larger valves designing the ball with the trim, power valve needs can be addressed.
ʉ۬With the diffusion trim in the seat, providing a valve solution as a downstream throttling/start-up valve, the MOGAS solution has outlasted the Y-pattern globe valves that had previously been used in a specific power plant as a sacrificial downstream throttling/start-up valve.
â€¨In this case, the MOGAS solution has already seen up to 12 start-ups without a problem, compared with the maximum of four start-ups a competitor’s valve had been providing.
â€¨Another example of MOGAS’ superior performance in the power industry is the use of its valves in spray control, where the valves accurately control the pressure drops and cavitation. Valves in these applications are continuously operating and require the high rangeability that MOGAS provides.
ʉ۬Still a third example is the use of MOGAS valves in the boiler feed pump recirculation application. Flashing and cavitation can be critical in this area, but the MOGAS and its FlexStream Technology are prevailing again.

Why Are You Crushing All of Your Coal?

SAS Global
Equipment wear is prevalent and constant in all coal crushing or sizing operations. Typically all coal being transported to the silo passes through a crusher to maintain a consistent and acceptable size. Studies show 80% to 90% of the coal being fed through the crusher is already at an acceptable size. This adds lots of unnecessary wear and amperage usage.

Increased system performance.
SAS Global developed the Triple Action SAS Self-Cleaning Coal Sizing Grid System (patent pending) to solve these problems. Designed to allow maximum material of acceptable size to bypass the crushing operation. The results are a drastic reduction in wear and tear on the crusher components, immediate savings in amperage required for running crusher motors, and increased feed rate capacity.

Chemical-free, Electrodeionization Module with Higher Feedwater Hardness Tolerance

Siemens Power Generation
Siemens announces the new Ionpure VNX-HH electrodeionization (EDI) module, which represents a significant advancement in feed water hardness tolerance, to 2 parts per million (ppm) as CaCO3 – a hardness level that is four times the industry standard of 0.5 ppm. This feature provides options for treating difficult feed water, and offers considerable capital cost savings by eliminating the need for two-pass reverse osmosis (RO) in many applications. EDI is a simple and chemical-free process for deionizing water using a combination of selective ion exchange membranes, conductive resins, and electricity to remove ions from water. The result of extensive research and development by Siemens, the new VNX-HH EDI module reduces the hardness scaling potential of the water through a proprietary combination of the membranes, the resins and construction of the module. Since the VNX-HH EDI module removes the necessity for two-pass RO in the treatment train, customers can save on capital costs while simplifying their water treatment design.

Addressing Growing Industrial Water and Wastewater Treatment Issues

Southern Research Institute
Southern Research Institute has added a new research capability focusing on the often expensive industrial challenge of remediating problematic constituents in water and wastewater sources. "The remediation of constituents in industrial water is important to the quality of our waterways,” said environmental toxicologist Derek Eggert, Ph.D., who leads the program. “Southern Research can now work with industrial clients to help develop environmentally and economically sound solutions to treat those problems." Eggert says the new program will help remediate contaminants—such as arsenic, mercury, selenium, aluminum, copper, lead, zinc, and oil and grease—from various waste streams in order to reuse or discharge into a local waterway.

The Southern Research approach includes consultation, bench-scale testing, pilot-scale testing, and performance measurements. Eggert’s team develops approaches that include identifying the chemical and physical constituents in effluents, identifying  the problematic constituents, and evaluating and developing remediation strategies to address those constituents. “We’re able to evaluate various treatment system designs in order to determine what might be the most cost-efficient way to remediate the constituents in water or wastewater,” said Eggert.
