SEL Relay Provides Complete Motor Protection—Detects Arc-Flash in Milliseconds

PULLMAN, WA — September 26, 2013 — Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, Inc. (SEL) today announced the introduction of the SEL-710-5 Motor Protection Relay, which protects both synchronous and induction motors. This is in contrast to most relays on the market today, which provide protection for only one or the other. The SEL-710-5 Relay also detects arc-flash events, with a typical response time of 4 milliseconds.

“Arc-flash incidents threaten the safety of electrical workers in utility, industrial, and commercial sectors,” said Bob Hughes, P.E., R&D power systems manager at SEL. “The SEL-710-5 responds to the light and excessive electrical current that accompany arc-flash events with incredible speed—about one-quarter of a cycle.”

The overcurrent supervised arc-flash detection in the SEL-710-5 provides fast, secure protection that directly translates to reduced equipment damage and improved worker safety. Additional features include synchronous motor protection and starting control, broken rotor bar detection, and protection of motors controlled by variable-frequency drives.

The SEL-710-5 is now available for a base price of $3,000. For more information on features, benefits, and applications, visit www.selinc.com/p174.
