How can accurate pH measurement prevent power plant corrosion?

Although each power plant has unique features (incoming water, fuel it uses, amount of power it generates, boiler or steam generator type) all of them are prone to corrosion. Low pH levels, dissolved oxygen presence and areas weakened by mechanical stress are among the most common causes of corrosion.

Avoid unnecessary overuse of chemicals
Accurate pH measurement in pure water applications help avoid unplanned shutdowns and controls the corrosion environment. Filtration, softening, dealkalization, demineralization, deaeration and heating are procedure to reduce conditions that may cause corrosion. Depending on what changes need to be carried out to the water, chemicals are dosed optimally, without unnecessary over use and associated overspend.

How to control corrosion environment?
The International Association for the Properties of Water and Steam (IAPWS) directs that the only additives to introduce into feedwater should be volatile alkalizing agents i.e. ammonia or volatile amines. That results in increased pH of feedwater in high purity boiler feedwater systems. Examples include Morpholine, methoxypropylamine (MOPA), cyclohexylamine (CHA), ethanolamine (ETA), and diethylaminoethanolamine (DEAE).
These volatile film forming amines reduce flow accelerated corrosion and under deposit corrosion which in turn will lead to a reduction in corrosion products throughout the water system.

Accurate pH Measurement in Low Conductivity, Power Plant Water Systems – pHure Sensor

Until recently, achieving accurate pH measurements in low conductivity measurements required three sensors (measurement, reference and temperature) and a significant amount of cumbersome maintenance.

The pHure Sensor LE comes with a low-volume housing that prevents particle and sludge accumulation that can upset measurements. It also has buffer containers that support the sensor during calibration.
