Center of Competence for Steam and Gas Turbines Established to Meet Customer Needs

US and Italy in a joint action to respond at best to customer needs.

The customer at the center. This is one of the leverage which brought ABB to establish two new Turbine Automation Center of Competence (CoC) for steam and gas turbine applications for the North American and Asian markets located in Natrona Heights, Pennsylvania, near Pittsburgh and in Genova, Italy, for the EMEA region (northern and central Europe, Mediterranean region, India and the Middle East). As the steam and gas turbines business relevance is continuously growing in all power and industrial sectors, ABB’s felt the need to provide specialized expertise through its Symphony Plus control system’s advanced solutions, designed to meet the needs of both retrofit and greenfield markets. A specific and comprehensive solution for turbines is based on S+ Turbine, a highly integrated portfolio of products for the control and condition monitoring of all turbine types, sizes and manufacturers.

“For several decades, ABB has been one of the world’s leading providers of turbine control systems, delivering cost efficient and technologically advanced solutions. We are pleased to introduce this new Turbine Automation Center of Competence,” said Massimo Danieli, responsible for ABB’s Power Generation business. “With Symphony Plus, our years of experience come together under ABB’s ‘evolution without obsolescence’ strategy allowing our open architecture to seamlessly integrate into the overall plant, in both power generation and water industries.”

ABB’s Symphony Plus family is a proven automation control system, ensuring that each new generation enhances its predecessors in accordance with its industry-unique life cycle policy of “evolution without obsolescence.” ABB’s extensive turbine island portfolio delivers all the components for new and retrofit turbine projects: high performance DCS, hydraulic components and system design, condition monitoring, instrumentation, excitation systems, generator circuit breakers, turbine/generator protection systems and generator current transformers. This highly integrated solution provides a common system for governor control, sequencing logic, generator synchronization, turbine generator auxiliaries and protection.
