Ash Utilization: Managing Byproduct Impacts for MATS

Our newest research paper demonstrates the possibilities for utilization of ash in concrete in post-MATS compliance scenarios. A new test is introduced to monitor ash quality, and then is applied to real-world utility ash and PAC ranges to show the impacts. We provide basic guidelines for ash management and specific options to continue ash sales post-MATS. The work was completed by ADA Carbon Solutions, Headwaters Resources, and Kline Consulting.

As MATS compliance deadlines approach, power plants are becoming increasingly focused on quantifying operating impacts and optimizing compliance plans. Effective mercury controls may have tradeoffs that need to be mitigated. An evaluation of alternative strategies can provide options that work for individual sites. Advanced Generation 2 Powdered Activated Carbons can result in reduced injection rates that avoid ash impacts through a combination of low addition rates and unique sorbent characteristics. Coal Combustion Residuals (CCRs) have recently been found by EPA to be safe for certain beneficial uses, including concrete.
