There are many factors to consider when designing a small scale heat recovery steam generator (HRSG). This paper discusses moving from single-cycle to combined-cycle cogeneration with a focus on projects that are under 20 MWe. It covers the benefits of cogeneration, also known as Combined Heat and Power (CHP), and emerging market drivers for CHP growth. The paper reviews design, typical arrangements, definitions and the relationship between gas turbines, HRSGs and steam turbine generator sets. Available resources from the U.S. Department of Energy also are identified.
