Traditional magnetic induction-based instrument transformers have served the power industry reliably for decades, but a new generation of low-power alternatives is gaining ground — particularly in data centers, medium-voltage switchgear, and gas-insulated substation applications where size, weight, and integration with digital secondary systems matter. This paper traces the standardization history of LPIT technology, examines how Rogowski coils and capacitive dividers are being deployed in real-world MV and GIS environments, and addresses the practical installation challenges — shielding, cable length, connector selection, and correction factors — that engineers must navigate to realize the technology’s full potential.
