AREVA NP to Upgrade Instrumentation and Control Systems at Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant

AREVA NP signed a contract to upgrade instrumentation and control (I&C) systems at Units 1 and 2 of Exelon’s Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant in Lusby, Md. The analog system – the Engineering Safety Features Actuation System (ESFAS) – allows operators to control and manage reactor operations to ensure efficient and reliable power generation.

The ESFAS is a triple modular, redundant system that initiates and controls safety systems that remove heat from the reactor. Under this contract, AREVA NP will work with Lockheed Martin for the first time to design, manufacture and assemble the non-digital system to include completion of factory acceptance testing, qualification and delivery to the site.

“Our team combines Lockheed Martin’s more than 60 years of experience with these I&C systems and AREVA NP’s I&C expertise in commercial nuclear steam supply system applications,” said Ron LeGrand, vice president of the I&C Operations Business Unit in North America. “The analog I&C solution we developed for Calvert Cliffs is exciting because it represents a solution for those operators who do not wish to move to a digital system.”

“AREVA NP’s solutions, analog or digital, range from safety I&C to simulation. Our instrumentation and control systems are key technological bricks that can adapt to our customers’ needs for the ever-safer operation of their nuclear plants,” said Frédéric Lelièvre, senior vice president of Sales, Regional Platforms and I&C at AREVA NP.
