Press Release

Alstom Grid to supply the new Smart Grid-ready SCADA / EMS for Swedish National Grid

Paris – 3 November 2010

On November 3, Alstom Grid has signed a contract with Svenska Kraftnät, the Swedish electrical Transmission System Operator (TSO), to provide a new Energy Management System (EMS) for Sweden’s national power grid.

At the contract signing ceremony held at Alstom Corporate Headquarters in Paris, Patrick Kron, Alstom’s Chairman and CEO welcomed the Svenska Kraftnät delegation led by its General Director Mikael Odenberg. Kron said, “Our partnership with Svenska Kraftnät demonstrates our commitment and expertise in bringing to market Smart Grid ready solutions that help provide secure, efficient and environmentally-friendly electrical networks.”

The new EMS will be based on Alstom Grid’s e-terra software suite, built around a high-performance, secure-in-design IT platform with Security and Event Management solution (SEM). Svenska Kraftnät will benefit from advanced features such as an advanced user interface for situational awareness, a Common Information Model (CIM) data modeler and a full Wide Area Measurement Solution (WAMS) for online stability. Additional interfaces to Svenska Kraftnät in-house applications, such as ARISTO fast simulator, will also allow Svenska Kraftnät to simplify planning, training and offline studies business processes within its organization.

In the longer term, this evolutionary, open-architecture Energy Management System will enable the Swedish power grid to better adjust to the future changes in the national and European electricity market to manage network challenges such as the increasing integration of renewable energy and the interconnection with other European transmission networks.

Svenska Kraftnät will install the new EMS at the National control Center in Sundbyberg and at the regional control center in Sollefteå. These two control rooms manage Sweden’s power network, which consists of 15,000 kilometers of 220 kV and 400 kV power lines, cross-border interconnectors (AC as well as DC) and substations. This National Grid and its associated SCADA*/EMS network management and supervision system are of vital significance to the Swedish state, and hence regulated strictly according to national security interests.

“We are more than ever committed to being a strong partner for Sweden’s electrical grid and all Scandinavian energy markets” says Jean-Michel Cornille, Senior Vice-President Automation. “By working with our clients on the reinforcement of their grid security and reliability, we are delighted to actively support the transformation of their electrical networks into tomorrow’s smart grids."

The contract is planned for a 22 month delivery. Once completed, Alstom Grid’s e-terra software Solutions will manage four Nordic TSOs (Denmark, Iceland, Norway and Sweden). In 2009, Alstom Grid also put in service the Nordic Operation Information System (NOIS) which facilitates the sharing of mission-critical operational data among the Nordic TSOs.
