Mercury Control in Wet FGD

Wet flue gas desulfurization (FGD) systems have shown a co-benefit of capturing mercury in coal-fired power plants. However, the capture effectiveness depends on factors such as FGD operation, oxidation of the mercury and removal of the mercury from the scrubber liquor. In some cases, mercury re-emission from the wet FGD may make it difficult for the plant to achieve MATS compliance mercury levels consistently. This study provides a successful example of an effective mercury compliance strategy over a four and a half month period in a unit with wet FGD.

Activated carbon is a cost-effective approach to remove mercury from the FGD liquor. Field testing demonstrated the successful application of ADA Carbon Solutions’ advanced water powdered activated carbon,  PowerPAC WS™, a PAC product designed for excellent water affinity and high dispersibility characteristics in a wet scrubber environment.  The long-term test at Salt River Project’s Navajo Station Unit 3 met the MATS mercury compliance limit with normal scrubber operation.
