Webinar Summary:

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is actively developing a new standard
addressing fundamentals of combustible dust. This standard does not replace, rather compliments,
existing standards and guides in the development of and maturing a combustible dust management
system. At the time of this conversation, the technical committee will be accepting public input as the standard is prepared for acceptance and implementation. The intent of this conversation is to
share insights on key elements of the proposed standard and seek input.

Objectives:

  • To familiarize the listener of the process for developing and revising a NFPA Standard and his/her role
  • To understand the impact and role that the new NFPA 652, Fundamentals of Combustible Dust Standard, in total dust management
  • To highlight key elements of a combustible dust management system as the standard stetes in its current draft

Brice ChastainBrice Chastain is Manager – Safety and Health with Georgia-Pacific’s Global Safety & Health group. Mr. Chastain has worked for Georgia-Pacific for over 4 years and is presently leading Georgia-Pacific’s Global Combustible Dust Risk Reduction Initiative. Mr. Chastain is the Principal Member representing Georgia-Pacific on the NFPA 654 – Standard for the Prevention of Fire and Dust Explosions from the Manufacturing, Processing, and Handling of Combustible Particulate Solids Technical Committee; the NFPA 664 – Standard for the Prevention of Fires and Explosions in Wood Processing and Wood Working Facilities Technical Committee; and the new NFPA 652 – Fundamentals of Combustible Dust Technical Committee. Brice has over 25 years of experience working as a Safety and Health and Industrial Hygiene professional specializing in the comprehensive practice of industrial hygiene (IH), safety, hazardous material (HM) control and management, combustible dust hazards and risk mitigation, and compliance auditing. Mr. Chastain is a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) and holds a Bachelors of Science degree from Clemson University and a Masters of Science degree specializing in Industrial Hygiene from the University of South Carolina.

Bob TaylorBob serves as the Secretary and Past Chairman of the Board of Directors of the PRB Coal Users’ Group and a principal member of various NFPA Technical Committees focused on combustible dust including NFPA 652, 654, and others. He recently retired after 29 years with one of America’s largest coal users – American Electric Power.
