The landscape for battery storage in the United States
The need for energy to become more affordable, clean and secure requires a shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources. 2022 was yet another record year for renewable energy as declines in costs for wind, solar PV and energy storage technologies impacted the rate of their deployment in power systems. But as the share of variable renewable sources increases compared to conventional fossil fuel generation, energy storage is becoming increasingly important to grid resilience and flexibility and the deployment of wind and solar generation planned for the next 10 years necessitates the mass adoption of energy storage.
In this white paper we examine the policy and regulatory landscape for battery storage across the USA and explore how batteries generate revenues across different RTO’s. This report focuses on grid-scale front-of-the-meter (FTM) and utility-scale storage. However, the behind-the-meter (BTM) market is also one with important potential for the energy storage sector, particularly as corporates seek to reduce their own emissions to achieve their sustainability goals.
