X-energy Holds First Public Meeting on Its Xe-100 Advanced Reactor
GREENBELT, Maryland (September 13, 2018) – X-energy held its first public meeting on September 11, 2018, with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to discuss the design of the Xe-100, a high temperature gas-cooled (HTGR) pebble bed advanced reactor. This week’s discussions are the beginning of X-energy’s pre-application engagement with the NRC and a follow-on to the company’s July 31 Regulatory Engagement Plan submission to the NRC Office of New Reactors (NRO).
Harlan Bowers, X-energy’s President, stated: “This initial meeting was intended to familiarize the NRC staff with our Xe-100 reactor design and program development. X-energy’s systematic and deliberate approach to conceptual design will result in a well-defined reactor solution; engagement with the NRC during the conceptual design process will enable us to address key technical issues that have a high degree of design influence. The result will be a complete reactor concept that effectively balances the use of current technologies and material standards while ensuring the solution delivers electricity at highly competitive rates.”
Dr. Kam Ghaffarian, X-energy’s Founder and CEO, said, “Advanced reactors will play a significant role in America’s energy future and we look forward to regular engagement with the NRC staff. Our NRC relationship has been highly positive to-date and the NRO core team is ready to support our regulatory needs.”
