Volvo Penta Hosts Largest Major Operator Training Event at Port of Los Angeles

(CHESAPEAKE, Va.) – Jan. 24, 2017 – Volvo Penta recently completed its biggest and most robust training event for the industrial business segment to date. Over the course of three weeks, the company led a series of classes for 80 technicians at the Port of Los Angeles. Participating companies included APM Terminals, International Transportation Service, Inc. (ITS) and SSA Terminals. The training was held in partnership with Taylor Machine Works, Inc. (TMW), TMW’s sister after-market parts and service company, Sudden Service, Inc., and TMW’s dealer, Cal-Lift, Inc.

A total of six classes were presented, with two sessions dedicated to each terminal organization. Topics covered included an overview of Volvo Penta’s industry-leading Tier 4 Final engine range with a close examination of the D13 engine in particular; maintenance; fault handling; VODIA diagnostics tool; Diesel Emission Fluid; and the Exhaust Aftertreatment System. An assessment test was given to the technicians at the end of each session.

“This education goes a long way in helping Taylor Machine Works and Taylor customers meet Tier 4 standards in the state of California. We appreciate Volvo Penta’s partnership and dedication in serving our customers,” said Robert Taylor, President of SSI, Inc.

The primary objective of the training was to educate operators on the Volvo Penta Tier 4 Interim and Tier 4 Final engines which are installed in port and material handling equipment in the Port of LA. Volvo Penta’s Tier 4 Final engines use a proven selective catalytic reduction (SCR) process with cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), to meet EPA emission standards. These engines do not require periodic regeneration, resulting in less downtime and lower maintenance costs for operators.

“Volvo Penta’s presence in ports from coast-to-coast continues to grow and with that we see a growing need to ensure our dealer technicians in these locations are well-trained and knowledgeable about the latest Volvo Penta technologies. This is why we offer a variety of training options for their continuous development,” said Magnus Gedda, manager, product training for Volvo Penta of the Americas.

Volvo Penta will be exhibiting alongside sister company Volvo Construction Equipment at the 2017 CONEXPO-CON/AGG in Las Vegas. Visit North Hall Booth 10036 for more information about Volvo Penta’s training offerings for industrial partners.
