Siemens to supply key equipment for combined cycle power plant in Canada

Siemens received an order to deliver the main components for installation at SaskPower’s planned Chinook Power Station – a 350 megawatt (MW) natural gas-fired power plant to be located near Swift Current, Saskatchewan in Canada. Customer is the Canadian engineering and construction company Burns & McDonnell. The thermal power project, scheduled for operation in the fourth quarter of 2019, will be able to power about 300,000 homes.

Siemens will supply one SGT6-5000F gas turbine, the SST-900 steam turbine, a SGen6-1000A generator, and one SGen6-100A generator. The combined cycle facility will pair the Siemens gas and steam turbines to make more efficient utilization of the fuel consumed by the power plant. This will be accomplished by utilizing the exhaust heat from the gas turbine to generate steam to power the steam turbine, greatly improving overall power-plant efficiency.

“We are pleased to supply our industry-leading turbines, generators and electrical equipment for this modern power infrastructure project,” said John Gibson, Senior Vice President of Sales North America at Siemens Power and Gas. “Harnessing cleaner-burning and affordable natural gas, this fuel-efficient facility will deliver reliable power while also helping to reduce emissions. We look forward to continuing to use our innovation to help grow Canada’s thermal power market.”
