Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems Americas Awarded 42nd and 43rd Orders for Industry’s Best Selling Advanced Class Gas Turbine from Tenaska

M501J turbine’s technological advancements continue to reshape the power sector’s expectations for efficiency and reliability

Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems Americas, Inc. (MHPSA) has been awarded a contract by Omaha, NE based Tenaska to provide two M501J gas turbines, each rated at 327 megawatts (MW), and generators for the Tenaska Westmoreland Generating Station, located in South Huntingdon Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. The 2-on-1, 925 MW power plant project award also includes a Long-Term Service Agreement.

A Tenaska affiliate, Tenaska Pennsylvania Partners, LLC, will build, own, and operate the facility which in combined cycle mode will be able to produce 925 MW of electricity, enough to serve about 925,000 homes. Of the approximately 7,000 MW of power generation Tenaska and its affiliates manage, the Westmoreland plant will be the most efficient and help set a new cost of electricity (COE) standard for the PJM region.

Turning to efficient, reliable “J” technology

“We are pleased to be working with Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems Americas for the power generation technology and long-term service of the Tenaska Westmoreland facility,” said Nick Borman, Tenaska senior vice president of engineering and construction. “The industry-leading efficiency and reliability and five year commercial operating track record of the J-series, combined with Tenaska’s expertise in power generation facilities, will help ensure Tenaska Westmoreland is a safe, efficient and reliable power plant.”

“The J-series turbine provides a unique combination of proven operating experience and world class output, efficiency, and reliability. In commercial operation since 2011, our best-in-class turbine provides a combined cycle efficiency approaching 62% and proven reliability in excess of 99%,” said Paul Browning, president & CEO of MHPSA. “Being chosen by Tenaska, an organization with a 30 year history of successfully developing power projects, clearly demonstrates that experienced project developers have embraced our technology. No other gas turbine in this 300 MW+ size range has even a single hour of commercial operating experience,” added Browning.

A total of 43 J-Series gas turbines have been ordered. Nineteen of these units are in commercial operation and collectively have achieved over 220,000 actual operating hours. Ten of the 43 J-Series units on order will be installed in North America. MHPSA’s first U.S. manufactured M501J was delivered last month from the company’s ultramodern manufacturing facility in Savannah, Georgia to  Grand River Dam Authority for installation at their Energy Center in Chouteau, OK.
