Equipment Showcase: Construction Equipment

Construction equipment is a critical part of the power generation industry, as new facilities are built and older facilities are upgraded to enhance efficiency and comply with evolving regulations. The successful operation of a power plant or other industrial facility depends on the timely organization and completion of construction projects, including choosing the best vendors to supply materials and services needed to keep the plant humming. Plant operators are mindful of securing the proper equipment to ensure construction projects move quickly and efficiently, and are cost-effective. Some of the leading manufacturers and service companies for construction equipment serving the power generation industry are featured here.

NAES is an independent services company dedicated to optimizing the performance of energy facilities across the power generation (Figure 2), oil and gas, and petrochemical industries. The company applies its deep experience in operations, maintenance, construction, engineering, and technical support to build, operate, and maintain plants that run safely, reliably, and cost-effectively. Optimizing the performance of a power-generating facility requires a conscientious application of technical expertise combined with business acumen. NAES focuses on the fundamentals—safety, reliability, compliance, and cost—and strives to operate a power plant the way it was designed and intended to be operated. Power generators face increasing technical and commercial risk, so plants need an operator that brings both performance know-how and financial insight. NAES hires motivated people, trains and qualifies them, implements effective processes, drives high performance, and seeks continuous improvement. NAES, Issaquah, Washington

Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction (DHIC) recently announced it had signed an agreement with Busan Port Authority (BPA) in South Korea to supply 12 transfer cranes (Figure 3) to Busan New Port’s West Pier by March 2022 for its Phase 2-5 installation. A transfer crane is used to load and transfer containers in a terminal yard via remote unmanned operations. Opened in 2006, Busan New Port currently operates more than 230 transfer cranes, most of which are Chinese imports, except for 49 units that DHIC had supplied for Phase 1-1 back in 2006. “This agreement means that Busan New Port will have its first batch of domestically manufactured cranes in 15 years. We will cooperate with our partners in order to continue supplying high-quality cranes that deliver outstanding performance,” said Hongook Park, head of DHIC’s Power Service business group. Master Link Product Designed for Heavy-Duty Applications

5. Master links are used in the manufacturing of one- and two-leg slings, while master link assemblies are used in the manufacturing of three- and four-leg slings. Green Pin supplies a range of master links and master link assemblies. Courtesy: Van Beest BV

The Green Pin heavy-duty master link (Figure 5) is a grade 8 master link for heavy-duty applications. By using a unique innovative production method, the master links are fully forged as a single piece, without any welding whatsoever. As a result, the master links meet the most stringent safety and performance requirements, and will keep working reliably in even the harshest environments. The master links are painted silver with a green mark indicating a maximum lifting angle of 120 degrees, making it easy for riggers to spot potentially unsafe operations. The exceptionally smooth surface reduces wear on counter components such as slings and shackles. To rule out cracks, each master link is submitted to several non-destructive tests before shipping. The consistent Charpy-V value of at least 42 joule throughout the entire master link makes it compliant with offshore certification requirements. All products are available from stock and ready for fast delivery. The master links are available in a range of options with working load limits as high as 400 tons. Talbert Introduces Trailer to Move Machinery

6. The 35FG-BVTL is a fixed-neck, drop-deck trailer designed for use by small- to mid-size equipment machinery movers. Courtesy: Talbert Manufacturing

Talbert Manufacturing, a North American leader in specialized heavy-haul solutions, has introduced the 35FG-BVTL (Figure 6)—a fixed-neck, drop-deck trailer for small- to mid-size equipment machinery movers. The 35-ton trailer is rated at 70,000 pounds concentrated in 20 feet and features hydraulic ramps for safe, efficient loading and unloading in limited spaces. The 35FG-BVTL is part of Talbert’s Double Drop Series. The overall length of the 35FG-BVTL is 48 feet, which includes a 22-foot-long deck that is 8 feet 6 inches wide, and an 8-foot 6-inch rear bridge section. The trailer’s fixed neck provides an economic alternative compared to removable gooseneck designs for operators that do not require a front unload option. Talbert designed the 35FG-BVTL with an 84-inch swing radius and 18-inch kingpin setting for increased maneuverability and versatility. The gooseneck features two-speed landing gear with standard sand shoes. The 36-inch sloping beavertail features a 14.98-degree load angle coupled with full-width plate with traction bars outside the main beams for optimal rear loading. Hydraulic ramps also allow for increased safety during loading by removing the need to manually lower or raise the equipment. Talbert Manufacturing, Rensselaer, Indiana
