Emerson introduces EDS Mobile: One of the first native applications for Apple devices for the power generation industry

PITTSBURGH (December 13, 2011) — Today at Power-Gen International 2011, Emerson Process Management introduced EDS Mobile, one of the power generation industry’s first native applications for users of Apple’s iPhone and iPad devices. Built using the Apple operating system, EDS Mobile technology utilizes standard Apple input gestures such as swipe, tap, drag, zoom and automatic screen orientation.

“We surveyed our power generation customers and many told us they have adopted smartphone technology not only for personal use, but also in their professional lives,” said Bob Yeager, president of Emerson Process Management Power & Water Solutions. “We immediately recognized the opportunity to give our customers more flexibility in how they manage operations by offering our EDS technology on a mobile platform.”

EDS Mobile is an extension of Emerson’s proven EDS technology, which provides remote users with a high-fidelity representation of what the operator sees in the control room. More specifically, EDS gathers information from control systems at a single unit or fleet of units, as well as from other enterprise systems, into one place, presenting near real-time data such as read-only process diagrams, alarm lists and trends. Historical data can also be accessed through this remote visualization tool.

Utilizing a widget menu, EDS Mobile also delivers Key Performance Indicator (KPI) data, which can be customized to match customer metrics, in the areas of:
• Fuel usage
• Plant availability
• Emissions
• Generation revenue
• Efficiency
• Power factor

Each KPI icon contains multiple data points, enabling users to drill down to view detailed information and trends in near real-time. For example, CO2, CO, SO2, NOx and opacity data can be viewed through the Emissions widget.

“Making this type of critical information available in near real-time on a mobile platform gives executives, managers, supervisors and engineering analysts much greater flexibility in managing operations,” explained Yeager, who notes that a native application for Android-based mobile devices will soon be available. “This is particularly valuable as power generators navigate today’s challenging economic and regulatory environment.”

For a demonstration of EDS Mobile technology, visit Emerson’s booth (Center Hall/5325) at Power-Gen International 2011, taking place Dec. 13-15 in Las Vegas.
