NRC Panel Deals Final Blow to Comanche Peak Expansion’s Opponents

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s (NRC’s) Atomic Safety and Licensing Board panel dismissed the last objection filed by anti-nuclear groups and a Texas lawmaker to block expansion of Luminant Energy’s Comanche Peak nuclear plant.

The three-judge panel ruled that there was “no remaining genuine dispute of material fact” in the opposition’s contention that the expansion could cause a severe radiological accident and that there were energy alternatives to the expansion, reported the Fort Worth Star Telegram on Friday.

Groups including the Sustainable Energy and Economic Development Coalition, Public Citizen, True Cost of Nukes, and Texas Rep. Lon Burnam (D-Fort Worth), had filed 19 contentions with the NRC against Luminant’s application to build and operate two new Mitsubishi Heavy Industry US-APWRs. All but one were thrown out last December.
