Web-Based EHS Monitoring and Reporting Software

A new customizable version of AIRSWEBTM Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) software from
Safety Management Systems, Inc., designed to the rigorous requirements of power and utility companies, is now being implemented by such industry giants as Florida Power & Light Inc. (FPL), Centrica Plc., Alstom Power, and MYR Group.
“Power industry companies must measure up to specific safety and environment-related standards that are more demanding than those of other businesses,” said Philip DeFina, chief operations officer of Safety Management Systems, Inc. “By working closely with clients such as FPL, Centrica, Alstom Power and MYR Group, we’ve developed features that meet and even exceed the requirements and expectations of EHS managers in the power industry.” Our latest power industry clients selected the AIRSWEB system after issuing a detailed RFP and evaluating vendors from all segments of the EHS software industry. They sought a Web-based application because there is no need for software to be installed or upgraded, there are no hardware requirements, and it affords easy collaboration between users in multiple remote locations.
Mobile Digital Recorder
Safety Vision, a global provider of mobile digital video solutions, introduces the RouteRecorder® CF2. This compact, mobile recorder supports two cameras, providing public works industries with quality video. Management Consulting Seminar
Solomon Associates, the premier global management consulting firm to the energy industry, will be conducting an Asset Optimization Seminar and Workshop to review how our clients have effectively used Solomon’s extensive data resources and expertise to better manage their power generation assets. To be held on Monday, May 11, 2009, prior to the ELECTRIC POWER 2009 Conference, the Solomon Power team will review case studies detailing how clients have used Solomon’s patented Equivalent Generation Complexity factor to assess spending levels for optimum performance, made budgetary re-assessments during the current economic downturn, and developed a better understanding of operating risk among a fleet of assets or a single generating unit.
The seminar is open to all ELECTRIC POWER attendees, including managers, directors, and officers in merchant, investor-owned, municipal, industrial, and cogeneration power companies with a goal of demonstrating how maintenance spending allocations can increase the probabilities of success with future reliability performance.
Sodium Bicarbonate SO2 Control

An important new product designed specifically for air pollution control, in particular SO2 elimination from stacks, will soon be available from the SOLVAir® Group at
Solvay Chemicals, Inc. The product, SOLVAir® Select 300 Sodium Bicarbonate, was developed after extensive testing showed its ability to remove SO2, especially from plants using an ESP as the particulate control device. Its rapid reaction time with acid gases provides for high levels of acid gas removal when used in dry sorbent injection systems. As the sodium bicarbonate enters the hot flue gas stream, it is rapidly converted to sodium carbonate particles with greatly increased surface area and porosity. This “activated” carbonate neutralizes acids (SO2, SO3, HCl, HF, etc.) with very high efficiencies.
The product is particularly versatile because it is effective over a wide range of operating temperatures. It can be used in flue gas streams at temperatures between 275F and 800F. SOLVAir Select 300 Sodium Bicarbonate will be produced at Solvay Chemicals’ plant at Green River, Wyoming. With start-up expected in 2010, initial production capacity for the product will be 125,000 tons per year. However, the plant is designed to be easily expanded to accommodate the anticipated growth of market demand.
Clutches for Green Energy Industry
From compressed air energy storage (CAES) to synchronous condensing applications, SSS synchronous-self-shifting clutches play an ever-increasing role in the power industry related to the impact of renewable energy, CO2 abatement, and optimization of power generation and utilization. For example, wind farms increase the need for reactive power, and
SSS Clutches in gas turbine peaking units allow the generators to be used for VAR production while the gas turbine itself is shut down. Worldwide, two CAES projects rely on SSS Clutches to shift motor/generators from compression to generator duty.
According to Glenn Weiss, PJM, there are regulated and growing markets for reactive power and spinning reserve; both provide opportunities for SSS Clutches. Bob Skladony, formerly of U.S. Power Gen, stressed the critical importance of reliable standby generation, and replaced OEM jaw clutches on 50+ gas turbine peaking generators with more reliable SSS Starting Clutches. Jim Berry, energy consultant, says increasing the spread between peak and off-peak electric rates gives new opportunities for SSS Clutch Company; large compressors used in chillers or gas pipelines can be dual driven with SSS Clutches, allowing time of day choice of either gas or electric power.
SSS Clutches are available from small turning gear to 320 MW at 3,000 rpm.
TPipe Supply
Tioga Pipe Supply Co, Inc. announced that it has signed an agreement with Westinghouse Electric Company LLC to supply critical components for the Reactor Coolant Loop System (RCLs) of Westinghouse’s new AP1000TM Generation III+ commercial nuclear power plant. Tioga has received purchase orders to supply critical components of the RCLs for six AP1000 reactors in the US, each of which will produce 1,100 megawatts. “This milestone agreement is a major achievement for Tioga and signals that the domestic nuclear power generation renaissance is underway,” said Tioga Executive V.P. Richard Clayden.
Tioga is proud to be a key supplier in the build program for the most advanced next generation nuclear power plants and is well positioned to play a major role in the resurgent global nuclear power industry. Tioga, a leading supplier of ASME Section III and related nuclear certified materials for new power plant construction, life extension, and maintenance and upgrade programs, will continue its aggressive expansion into the rapidly increasing global market for nuclear power

UDry Bottom Ash Handling
United Conveyor Corporation (UCC), a global leader in ash handling systems, has unveiled the VAX Vibratory Ash Extractor for dry bottom ash handling. Designed to improve plant reliability while lowering total cost of ownership, the patented VAX system is ideal for power plants where water is scarce or disposal is a consideration. The VAX incorporates proven vibratory technology that is simple and safe. Coil springs transmit a precisely controlled vibrating motion to the conveyor trough, eliminating the need for rollers, tensioning devices and secondary conveyors. The VAX is designed with no moving parts in the boiler flue gas environment, providing a higher level of overall reliability.
The simplicity of the VAX design virtually eliminates the chance of breakage and forced boiler outages caused by a large slag fall. The VAX conveyor deck is constructed of 20mm thick 400 BHN steel to effectively resist large slag falls and the coil springs absorb impact. The VAX system has an integrated forced air system that delivers continuous air flow through the conveyor deck to create a unique vibrating, fluidized bed. The result is intensive ash combustion and cooling, producing 60% greater heat recovery and increased boiler efficiency compared with moving belt systems.

First Solar PV-Rated Cable
Joe Navarro, president of Austin, Texas-based
USA Wire & Cable, Inc., announced the launch of USA SOLAR CABLE, the first photovoltaic-rated cable for the solar energy industry. This new cable will conform to UL’s Photovoltaic Technical brief and specification UL 4703. “In the last six months, we’ve been working with our customers to define a cable that addresses the unique issues related to solar energy installations. We expect that USA SOLAR CABLE will become the quality standard which will deliver the greatest long term value to owners and developers of solar energy projects. We’re excited to be at the forefront of supplying the renewable energy industry,” said Hugh Robertson, VP sales.
USA SOLAR CABLE will be used to wire the hundreds of photovoltaic panels to the electrical collection system on utility scale solar energy projects and is designed to withstand long-term exposure to extreme conditions. The overall jacket is lead-free, halogen-free, limited smoke, flame retardant, and environmentally friendly. Unlike competitive products, in the case of fire, USA SOLAR CABLE will not emit harmful gasses, smoke, or hydrochloric acid when exposed to water.
